Road to Freedom

This is not just another road race. It is a journey of memory, honour and pride.

The "Road to Freedom" was born from the inspiration and initiative of the Cultural Association of Kontias, Lemnos, with the aim of connecting sport with historical memory and the cultural heritage of the island.

The first edition took place in 2012, marking 100 years since the liberation of Lemnos, honouring the historic route of the landing party of Admiral Pavlos Kountouriotis, who led the island to freedom in 1912.

The "Road to Freedom" follows the historic route covered by Admiral Kountouriotis' landing party for the liberation of Lemnos. On the same paths where, more than a hundred years ago, an important page of the island's history was written, hundreds of footsteps now come together to honour those who fought for freedom.

Since then, the event has been organised every year with the care and love of the members of the Cultural Association of Kontias, growing into an institution embraced by more and more participants each year. This ever-growing participation is a source of great joy for the Association, proving that history, sport and the values the event stands for can unite people of all ages.

The success of the "Road to Freedom" would not be possible without the invaluable contribution of its volunteers. The event is made possible by the dedication of the Association's members, but above all it rests on the generous, selfless efforts of the volunteers who offer their time, energy and love every year. To all of them, the Association expresses its deep gratitude.

Every participant becomes part of this historic route. Every kilometre is a tribute to the courage, determination and self-sacrifice of those who gave Lemnos its freedom.

We do not run only for the finish line. We run to keep memory alive, to pass history on to the next generations, and to prove that the values of freedom, unity and strength are timeless.
